Responsible Tourism in Zambia
In 1950 Norman Carr set up Zambia’s first photographic safari camp, he did so in co-operation with the local chief and in partnership with the local community. This was the first example of responsible tourism in Zambia if not in Africa and was the forerunner to many modern day concepts of community based natural resource management.
The staff and management of Norman Carr Safaris are proud to uphold the legacy left us by our founder.
Identifying and nurturing potential in individuals was always one of Norman’s strengths. The company has lead the way in the Luangwa Valley in training and empowering people from the surrounding Mfuwe area and we like to think that we ahead of most when it comes to responsible tourism practices in Zambia. Apart from the employment and training that we provide to so many people, we have concentrated our efforts in 2 main areas, namely education and health.
In the following pages of this section you can read about the work that the Kapani School Project has been undertaking in Mfuwe for more than 20 years now and also about the Kakumbi Clinic Project and the work being done at Kapani to further HIV and Aids awareness.
These are some of the issues closest to our hearts and we encourage guests who come and stay with us to ask us for more detail about these or any other aspects of our policy on responsible tourism in Zambia.
In short, when guests come on safari with us, we like the experiences that they enjoy to leave as little mark on the natural environment and as big a mark on the local population as possible.
