Our Projects

Kukumbi Clinic Project
The Kakumbi Clinic Project is a charitable initiative that is managed and overseen by the Luangwa Safaris Association, this is the umbrella body under which the safari operators in the Luangwa Valley gather in order to speak as one and, as importantly, to run joint community projects such as this.
Until the year 2000 residents of Mfuwe invariably had to travel over 50kms to the hospital in Jumbe in order to receive medical attention. Although there was always a rural health clinic in Mfuwe it had few, if any, qualified staff and at the best of times a headache pill was as far as their stocks of drugs would stretch.
As a local safari operator we subscribe to the Kakumbi Clinic Project which pays for a doctor from overseas to come on a 3 or 6 month, essentially volunteer basis, to practice at the clinic. Most of their time is spent treating the Valley, who now have a qualified and dedicated doctor on their doorstep. We are also able to offer a call-out scheme where the doctor, for a fee, will visit any camps in the area in order to consult with a visiting tourist, this provides a much called for service to the tourism industry whilst generating much of the money needed to run the project.
A doctor is no good unless he has equipment and drugs to prescribe so the other aim of the project is to ensure that good stocks of medicines are kept at the clinic, in the past these have either been donated or purchased with funds raised from well wishers.
The project has also undertaken a full refurbishment of the clinic buildings and in 2003 some visitors to Kapani were kind enough to raise funds through their Rotary Club back home in order to build 3 new houses for the clinic staff who, until then, had been living in terrible conditions in the decrepit government houses.
If you would like to find out more about how you can help this most worthwhile of projects please contact us for information.
