Educational Theatre in the Luangwa Valley
“SEKA Theatre Group”
Norman Carr’s granddaughter Miranda Guhrs and an acting colleague of hers from Chipata, our nearest town, have established a theatre group close to Kapani Lodge. Their primary goal is to create a visual spectacle that contains an educational message. They do this through a vibrant blend of traditional song and dance, puppetry, physical theatre and storytelling. The group is named Seka, which means 'to laugh' in the local language.
The performers are all from villages close by to Kapani. They are people for whom living with wild animals is a daily reality. They care about the natural resources that surround them and believe in educating their peers to conserve wildlife.
From their humble beginnings in the Luangwa Valley the group have toured Europe, Africa and the United States with various productions. The team of actors is a diverse group of people from single mothers to reformed poachers to royalty in line to the chieftainship throne.
Most of the performances however are in village communities and are passing on messages about conservation and how best to learn from the wildlife around you. Another of their common themes is that of Aids awareness.
At Norman Carr Safaris we often like to invite Seka to come to Kapani and perform for our guests. Whenever we do this we will also invite our staff and their families. Although these performances are of great interest to our guests their message is usually targeted to the local audience.
If you want to invest in the people of South Luangwa then you can buy a performance of Seka's HIV/AIDS awareness play. For just $200 the group will perform to an audience of more than 200 people on the importance of knowing your status, and protecting against infection.
To find out more about this innovative form of community theatre please see their website at www.seka-educational-theatre.com
