Game Sighting Highlights in Norman Carr Safaris' Camps

We keep game sightings books in each of the bush camps and now update you through our pages on Twitter and Facebook. For some of the historic sighting records please keep reading below.

Kapani
15-Apr-2009 Lawrance came across a mating pair of leopard who seemed happy to perform in full view of the vehicle.
25-Mar-2009 Morning drive - grey and overcast, looked like rain but Shaddy decided to risk it. Water levels high and roads a little limited - headed towards Mbangula lagoon and spotted fresh wild dog tracks. Coming back from Mbangula a leopard had crossed minutes before over the top of the wild dog tracks!
So much game this morning - elephant, zebra, impala, puku, buffalo - maybe all gathering on the higher ground due to the high river levels?
Headed to the old airstrip shortcut, crossed the Mushilashi to Lupunga spur and found the Chichele Hill pride of lion by the big boabab - 11 of them in superb condition. Shaddy describes them as fat, golden and clean.
Spotted a bachelor herd of 13 zebra who had been through the wars - one big stallion had a huge gash in his left front quarters, the claw marks clearly visible. Another younger male who has been seen a lot lately has his whole lower jaw missing, probably as a result of a fight. There is much speculation about how he is surviving - eating and drinking with no lower jaw, but he appears OK!
A huge female leopard then just wandered out of the bush - no warning, no alarm calls! She sauntered past the car about four feet from the guests! Shaddy modestly emphasizes that this was just one of those lucky days - right place, right time!
23-Mar-2009 A report of interest to birders: 4 lesser kestrals; 21 (yes 21!) amur falcons; an adult palm nut vulture; an adult peregrine falcon perched about 10 feet from the vehicle; 2 steppe buzzards; and most amazing of all - a European honey buzzard. All in one drive!

Luwi Bushcamp
23-Aug-2008 Resident large crocodile ‘Bismark’ feeding on another crocodile approximately 9ft in length.
27-Aug-2008 7 lioness and 2 cubs catching a warthog opposite camp.
First Side Striped Jackal sighting in eight years – very exciting.
30-Aug-2008 Approximately 11 lion in camp calling all night. A mating pair also seen in the Luwi river 400 metres up-stream.
06-Sep-2008 Tracked fresh lion spoor for 3km. On foot, found 13 lion feeding on buffalo carcass.
12-Sep-2008 Three Wild dog in front of camp, also a herd of seven Hartebeest with three calves observed.
21-Sep-2008 Hyena kill Puku on plain in front of camp.
Rare sighting of a herd of 10 Cookson’s Wildebeest and 12 Elephant seen at the lagoon.
23-Sep-2008 Two Big Eland bulls being chased by two male lions on a walk downstream from camp.

Nsolo Bushcamp
23-Aug-2008 Whilst taking dinner in the river bed a family of 6 elephant come down to drink and dig for water 20 metres from the dinner table.
  Five buffalo bulls in camp.
25-Aug-2008 Pair of Dickinson’s Kestrels.
Five Lioness and three cubs in the river bed in front of Chalet 2.
Constant Elephant and Buffalo in camp drinking from the waterholes.
A resident mature Kudu bull comes to drink at our waterhole every afternoon.
An illusive and rarely seen large Grey Mongoose searching for water in front of the camp was mobbed by a troop of vervet monkeys.
14-Sep-2008 The three wild dog we have been seeing regularly took down a female impala 1km upstream from camp.
20-Sep-2008 Seven lion and three cubs observed 2km from camp on foot. A female leopard on the riverside loop was seen drinking from an elephant-made waterhole.

Kakuli Camp
Two resident hippo in the lagoon in front of the Chitenge.
Elephant continuously in camp.
Lion and leopard seen on a number of occasions drinking from the lagoon in front of camp.
20-Aug-2008 Female leopard and two cubs seen with a dead impala on the Luwi river crossing.
27-Aug-2008 A large python approximately 3.5 metres (approx 11 ft) long, having swallowed a female impala, seen lying under a couple of dried bushwillows. It is still there unable to move and slowly digesting the meal.
Lion, lion and more lion! Kakuli pride continue to dominate the area and the camp. Their constant presence in the shade of the large winterthorn in front of camp during the day prevents other animals from coming to drink at the waterhole. The two new cubs are causing quite a stir as a result of their totally different appearances. One is deeply rosetted the other seems to display a mild albinism – very blond, light eyes and lacking the distinctive black ear markings and black nose.
11-Sep-2008 Two weeks ago four leopards were seen in a large sausage tree together. A large male was feeding on an impala carcass whilst mother and cubs watched. he then proceeded to climb down the tree witht he carcass and run off with the kill.
22-Sep-2008 Eight lioness and three large males were observed killing a puku behind camp and finishing it in less than 15 minutes.
23-Sep-2008 Two dead hippo in the river in front of camp attracted in excess of 150 crocodiles fighting for meat.
Spectacular sight of 42 eland on the opposite bank coming down to drink.

Mchenja Camp
19-Aug-2008 A fresh dead leopard was found 2km from camp with a lot of wild dog spoor around. Levy followed the spoor on a walk and close by a pack of eight wilddog were seen, with full bellies. We deduct that the dogs had killed and eaten the leopard – an extremely rare occurrence.
21-Aug-2008 At 0615 opposite camp a lioness was seen chasing a sub-adult hippo and jumping onto its back – the hippo made it to the water in time!
3 different leopard were seen on the night drive.
  Rare sighting of a serval
  Palm nut vulture seen
01-Sep-2008 Last night guests at Mchenja were enjoying a sundowner at a bend on the Luwi river where they witnessed a lioness running down the river past them. They followed in the vehicle and watched eight lion pull down a buffalo bull in front of them in daylight. The pride numbered 12 with two new cubs easily distinguished as one is completely blond almost yellow and the other deeply rosetted.
Almost a daily appearance of a large male leopard on the opposite bank marking and patrolling his territory.
12-Sep-2008 Three wilddog seen just north of the camp.
Female leopard seen in a leadwook tree with a young cub in tow.
13-Sep-2008 Wonderful sighting of a leopard trying to catch a guinea fowl which was roosting in a tree. Unfortunately for the leopard but fortunately for the guinea fowl, the leopard failed.
14-Sep-2008 Dead hippo being eaten by over a hundred crocodiles in front of camp.
