Twelve Night South Luangwa, Livingstone & Lower Zambezi

Please note that all of our safaris are tailor-made; this itinerary is just a suggestion and can be amended to better fit your requirements.

2 nights Kapani Lodge
5 nights Norman Carr Safaris Bush Camps
2 nights Livingstone
3 nights Lower Zambezi

Guide Price: US$ $8,035 per person (peak season)
US$ $6,970 per person (off peak season)

This safari combines the wildlife and remote camps of the South Luangwa with the magnificent Victoria Falls and the variety of the Lower Zambezi National Park.

Days 1 and 2
(Kapani Lodge, South Luangwa National Park)
Kapani Lagoon Suite
Kapani Lagoon Suite
You will be met at Lusaka Airport and escorted onto your domestic flight to Mfuwe. This flight will take an hour and will transport you into what is considered to be the country’s best gameviewing area. You will be met by your safari guide at Mfuwe Airport and driven to camp in time to settle in before brunch.

The Luangwa Valley is home to a vast array of different mammal species. It used to be known as the Valley of the Elephants and elephants are one animal that will be ever present throughout your stay in this Park. Endemic species such as the Thornicroft’s Giraffe and Cookson’s Wilderbeste will be pointed out by your guides but the excitement really starts when the sun goes down and the spotlight is brought into play - the South Luangwa is probably the best National Park in Africa for watching leopards in their natural environs.

Elephant Walk
Days at Kapani Lodge start early with a light breakfast around the camp-fire watching the sun rise over the lagoon. Your morning game-drive in an open four-wheel drive vehicle lasts for about four hours and brings you back for a well earned brunch. The few hours after brunch can be used to relax by the pool or to browse through the camp's library; perhaps choose a book and find one of the quiet corners of the garden to lose yourself for a while before the excitement of the afternoon/night safari. Dinner is served in various locations after your safari but invariably the star studded sky is directly overhead.

Days 3 to 7
(Walking Safari - Luwi, Nsolo and Kakuli Bush Camps)

Luwi Tea
From Kapani you will be driven deep into the National Park to Luwi Bush Camp, a wonderfully rustic camp set in the deep shade of large trees close to a permanent lagoon that is home to a large population of Hippo and even more Crocodile. The rooms at Luwi have grass walls and thatched roofs with bathrooms that are open to the trees and stars above.

On arrival your professional guide will introduce you to the armed escort scout who will accompany you on your first real walking safari. Your guide will take time to point out the tracks and signs that he uses to interpret the bush that you are walking through. This first excursion will be a taster for what is to come.

Nsolo Outside
Your first night in the bush camp is likely to be accompanied by the noises of animals around camp. You will lie awake, eager for dawn to come. When it does, your guide will interpret the calls that kept you awake as you head out together and pick up the fresh tracks of a pride of lion or investigate the alarm calls of the local troop of baboon. This is no nature trail, this is the real thing, you are tracking big game through the African bush, on foot!

On the second morning at Luwi Bush Camp you will head out from camp as you did on the previous day but this time your guide will walk you down the Luwi river course. Your destination is Nsolo, the second of your bush camps.

Kakuli Shower
After a few hours' gentle walking you will wander into the new camp. A cool drink will be ready for you, brunch will be on the table and your bags will be in your room. Your home for the next two nights will be a raised deck with grass walls on three sides and a tall, cool thatched roof. Once more your bathroom is open to the sky above.

The next morning will see another move, this time further down the Luwi River, again on foot, to its confluence with the main Luangwa and to Kakuli Camp. This camp is tented and has stunning views along a stretch of the Luangwa that is home to over five hundred Hippo.

Most of the gameviewing is still on foot although there are more roads in this area so it is possible to use vehicles and with a dense population of leopards in the area the night drive safaris are usually most rewarding.

Days 8 and 9 (Tongabezi Lodge - Livingstone)
Victoria Falls
Victoria Falls
The flight from Mfuwe transits Lusaka on its way to Livingstone where you will be met and transferred to Tongabezi Lodge.

Although there are a number of accommodation options whilst in Livingstone, we work very closely with Tongabezi Lodge, one of Africa’s most romantic destinations. The Lodge is set on a magnificent bend in the Zambezi River some twenty kilometres upstream from the Victoria Falls themselves.

Two nights spent in the Livingstone area is hardly sufficient as there is so much to do. An up-close view of the Falls is a must, and there are plenty of adrenalin-filled activities on offer, but we recommend that you also put time aside to enjoy the tranquility of the camp itself.

Days 10, 11 and 12 (Lower Zambezi National Park)
Boat
Boat
There are three operators in the Lower Zambezi, all of whom we can thoroughly recommend: Chiawa, Chongwe and SausageTree Camps. Each tented camp is set right on the bank of the Zambezi River.

The gameviewing in the Lower Zambezi is surpassed only by the beauty of the views. With the steep escarpment behind you and the Zambezi in front, few fail to be moved by this national Park.

Activities are varied and with three days here one should try to experience as much as possible. Morning and afternoon drives or walks are always offered but it is essential to spend at least some of your time on the water itself. Sunset drifts are an option and for the more adventurous, a paddle in canoes along one of the many channels frequented by hippo, elephant and buck. The Lower Zambezi is a Park for everyone and a perfect end to an exciting Zambian safari.

Day 13 (Travel)
Your flight from the Lower Zambezi is early this morning in order to have you in Lusaka in time for your onward flight out of Zambia.
