Walking from Bush Camp to Bush Camp
Traditional mobile walking safaris are really a thing of the past in modern-day Zambia. When Norman Carr first started traipsing through the bush he was invariably accompanied by a long line of porters carrying everything that could possibly be required.
Life is a little easier today and we like to provide our guests with a few more creature comforts than could easily be carried on the heads of our staff. This said however, we have not lost sight of the excitement offered by a traditional mobile walking safari. The sense of adventure one gets when walking with a destination in mind, is not to be missed.
Our four bush camps have been carefully sited in areas close to water holes or rivers. They are close enough to each other that one can take a walking safari trip from camp to camp, but far enough away that one can notice subtle changes in habitat.
Guests will usually visit one or other of our inland camps first. Luwi and Nsolo Bush Camps are both deep in the middle of the South Luangwa National Park and on the course of the Luwi River, a tributary of the Luangwa. Kakuli is then on the confluence of the Luwi and Luangwa rivers. Many guests will spend several days in these camps walking from one to the next down the course of the Luwi river. The feeling of achievement when you reach the Luangwa is memorable and gives a certain sense of purpose to your walking safari trip.
Typically the distance between the camps can be covered in the three hours or so of your morning safari walk. One can never tell of course what you will see on the way. You may divert to sit and watch a herd of elephants or be attracted by the alarm calls of a troop of baboon, as they sound out the presence of a predator. Either way, when you arrive at your next camp your bags will be in your room and you will be welcomed with a warm smile and a cold drink.
Norman Carr Safaris is the only company in Zambia to offer a true luxury walking safari trip from camp to camp. Each safari is tailor made to suit our guests. You might choose a shorter trip or opt to have several nights in each camp, the choice is yours.
We like to think that we have captured the soul of the traditional mobile walking safari and transformed it into a modern day luxury experience.
