Another Yellow Fever Update!!

Yet more news for you about the on-going saga of the yellow fever situation.

We are NOW told that Yellow Fever vaccinations are NOT required for travellers from Zambia going to or passing through South Africa! I am sorry! For all those of you who had the jab (including me) it now appears that it is NOT needed.

This is the information we have been given - but PLEASE WATCH THIS SPACE as things MAY change - I really am sorry for the lack of complete clarity - we are as frustrated as you!

THE SOUTH AFRICAN DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH’S (DOH) HAS STATED THAT ITS PROPOSED POLICY REQUIRING TRAVELLERS TO AND FROM ZAMBIA TO GET VACCINATED AGAINST YELLOW FEVER HAS NOT YET BEEN ENACTED AND THEREFORE THE CURRENT POLICY REMAINS UNALTERED. [By which they mean that currently Yellow Fever vaccination is NOT required]

“THE DEPARTMENT IS STILL LOOKING AT REVIEWING THE POLICY,” SAYS DR FREW BENSON, DOH CLUSTER MANAGER OF COMMUNICABLE DISEASES.AS THIS IS NOT YET POLICY, THE PORT HEALTH AUTHORITIES WILL NOT BE REQUESTING PROOF OF VACCINATION, SAYS THE SOUTH AFRICAN SOCIETY OF TRAVEL MEDICINE (SASTM). The health authority has said that, although there are a few clinics that are still administering the inoculation, it will only be given to travellers visiting endemic areas. This, therefore, excludes Zambia.

Another bit of important and vexing news is that Royal Zambezi Airstrip management on the Lower Zambezi have decided, without warning, to impose a $25 per person levy on each passenger access to Royal Airstrip. They propose to raise this to $65 per passenger per access in 2012! Again - we are looking into it and trying to find the reasons and also alternatives - will keep you informed.
