First President of Zambia His Excellency Dr Kenneth Kaunda
KK is a passionate advocate for conservation, especially tree planting. The developments his government made; the tar road, the airport, the bridge over the Luangwa, the declaration of the South Luangwa as a national park and his work with Norman Carr is a huge part of the success of the Luangwa as a sanctuary and wildlife destination. The fact that Zambia has so many national parks is due in no small measure to his vision.

KK with the head teacher, Abes, Anna from Chipembele, the District Commissioner,
Pam Carr, and to his right - me, Gid
He was thrilled by the project and wanted to pass on personal thanks to all its supporters. He says it's a wonderful example of partnership and of how, when everyone works together, we can work miracles. He wants to make this project an example of excellence and roll it out not only to other schools in our area, but nationally.

Lisa from Chipembele explains the project
KK planting his tree!
KK, as he is affectionately known here in Zambia is seen as the father of the nation and is enormously respected and loved throughout the region. The fact that Zambia is such a peaceful country can be attributed very much to him and his policy of One Zambia, One Nation is still an incredibly strong motto. People joyfully call out “KK!! One Zambia, One nation!!” as he drives past waving his trademark white handkerchief to the delight of everyone.

Congratulations on a job well done
The tree nursery
It’s been a real honour and pleasure having him here and unbelievably motivating for the pupils and conservation club members at Yosefe, as well as us at NCS and Chipembele – he’s a real inspiration and still has immense influence over policy. The nation watches to see who he will get behind in general elections and his seal of approval can swing the vote - he is still a very important man but is also deeply kind, humble, humorous and still carries an abiding love for the nation and it's people and wildlife. At 86 years old his energy is astounding and he still jogs on to the scene and energetically leads the singing of his rousing anthem - Tiyende Pamodzi - Let us go together.
