Kapani School Project update - and the “80,000” Club.
I have had lots of requests for an update on progress of the Kapani School Project and this is very overdue! Thanks to donations from past guests and our wonderful supporters we continue to be one of the major sponsors of education in this area. 2010 was yet another busy year – and a really interesting one for us in terms of strategy and policy as well as achievements and events.
The day to day running of the project – ie the fundraising, the disbursement of funds and the overseeing of sponsorships and projects falls to us;

Biz
Gid
Abraham Banda – Manager of Kapani, director of NCS and world renowned safari guide
Cosam Phiri – NCS Accountant
Me – Christina (aka) Gid - Marketing Director of NCS
Pam Carr – Artist and daughter of Norman Carr
Busyland Sakala (Biz) – NCS Stores Manager
Dave Wilson – MD of NCS
Shaddy Nkhoma – Manager Nsolo Bush Camp.

Shaddy
Pam
It’s worthy of note that Abes, Cosam and Busyland are all ex sponsored pupils of the Kapani School Project which speaks volumes for it’s success.
In 2010 we sponsored;

Cosam
Dave
25 Primary children
68 Secondary pupils
22 students in college and further education
We finished the extension of the library
We established an indigenous tree planting project and planted thousands of trees around the school and in the children’s villages We supported an antilitter project together with Chipembele Wildlife Education Centre

Abraham
The core
Our guides continued with their regular visits to local schools to give talks about wildlife and conservation and we continue to lobby at high level for improved provision of facilities, better opportunities for girls, awareness raising of HIV/Aids and other health issues and the fundamental importance of conservation to our area.
The School Fund’s focus is turning almost exclusively now to sponsorships. We have added a large amount of infrastructure to the school over the years in the form of classroom blocks, a lab, the library, teacher’s houses and ablution blocks.

Zambia as a country is becoming more able to support herself in terms of finance for infrastructure projects and a combination of aid assistance and overseas investment means that there are funds in government coffers to build classrooms throughout the country so we feel it is very important not to spend donations in areas where the government and existing bodies are (or should be) already active.
We raise around $80,000 per year to enable us to continue this sponsorship commitment and see Kapani School Fund students all the way through their education for as long as they need us and as long as they are putting in 100% effort.

It's a lot of money that's for sure – GBP50,000. But when you think about it it’s actually only 100 people finding a "spare" $800 (GBP500) per year - $15.38 per week) GBP9.60 per week. $2.19 (GBP1.37) per day – ie a newspaper and a Mars Bar each day!
We already have a good few members of what has affectionately become known as the "80,000 Club". But we need more, and we need long term commitments - if you'd like to join us and help to make a future for the children of the Luangwa - drop a line to us at Kapani@normancarrsafaris.com and I'll be glad to tell you how to sign up! And remember – every single penny of your donation goes straight to where it is needed most, nothing at all is spent on admin and all our time is given voluntarily.
