Getting Around Zambia
Zambia is a geographically large country and its most popular tourist attractions are a long distance from each other. The road and rail infrastructure throughout the country has traditionally been very poor, making terrestrial transport both arduous and in most cases quite expensive.
Partly due to the poor condition of most roads in the country, self drive vehicle hire is not commonly offered. If cars are hired for travel through the country they are usually 4-wheel drive, come with a driver and are prohibitively expensive.
There is a line of rail between Livingstone and Lusaka. The track then terminates and restarts north of Lusaka at a town called Kapiri Mposhi. From here the Tazara railway takes passengers North East to Tanzania and beyond.
By far the easiest and most common way for tourists to gat around Zambia is by air. There are now 2 companies offering scheduled services to the major tourist destinations, namely Proflight and Zambia Airways. Norman Carr Safaris works very closely with both of these companies and in the peak season there can be as many as four flights a day between Lusaka and Mfuwe and probably at least two options to connect between Mfuwe and Livingstone and vice versa.
The Lower Zambezi National Park is typically serviced by light aircraft from Lusaka but it is also possible to book direct flights into this National Park from both Mfuwe and Livingstone.
Norman Carr Safaris is more than happy to assist guests with their internal Zambian flights and we also offer a meet and greet service for all our guests at Lusaka Airport when on arrival into Zambia.
Typical flight times between the major points of interest are as follows :
| Lusaka – Mfuwe | 1 hr |
| Lusaka – Livingstone | 1 hr |
| Lusaka – Lower Zambezi | 35 minutes |
| Mfuwe – Livingstone | 1.5 hrs including 30 minutes on the ground in Lusaka |
